Review: Sushi Groove, 1Utama

This place has been receiving rather rave reviews for their unconventional take on Japanese food. Well, fine. I am a sucker for all things Japanese. Their food, more so.

It was a last minute invite because I was getting ready to leave 1U when roxygal messaged me at the eleventh hour for dinner. To be frank, I was ready to drop dead from hunting for a decent yoga mat all over the mall for 2 hours. Seriously miss the days when malls were smaller.

We reached the place a little round 9.30pm and the place wasn't exactly packed. Just a few tables. Green theme. Very organic.

I ordered the hot tea while he had ice lemon tea. The ocha is refillable.

Pickled ginger. I never liked them because I don't like anything pickle. Even when I order McD's cheese burger or Quarter pounder, I make it a point to ask them to leave the pickles. But I was feeling adventurous and gave it a shot.
Now, I know why I dont like them.

The wasabi.

I ordered a set of sushi which came with the ocha and soup. The soup is certainly more flavourful but why was it served warm? No, not just warm. Luke warm. It would have been better if it was piping hot. The seaweed was a bit too chunky for my liking with bits of tofu. They threw in mini clamps too. I think it's the seafood factor that gave the soup a more wholesome taste.

This is the salad. I like.

A variation of sushi. Oh Lordie, forgive me for I have forgotten the names of the sushi. It was my first time, after all shy The red dot is chili sauce. With a generous amount of thousand island and mayo, it does taste good. Sushi itself is basically salmon wrapped rice. Me thinks. Deep fried. Good.

Baked salmon crab cream. OR something like that. The top cream has a peculiar taste to it. When you bite into it, there's something hearty in the middle that takes you by surprise. An acquired taste.
But the fish roe was good. Can feel them going pop underneath my incisors.

A deep fried sweet sushi. Not bad as well. In case if you're wondering is that a godsent like, it's just James' hp.

My verdict on this place? This is probably a fusion themed Japanese restaurant. If you prefer the traditional kaiten belt offering, this is not your place.
